Rep. Jasmine Crockett questions Trump administration on border data accuracy

Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a Democrat from Texas, has ignited a firestorm by challenging the administration’s claims of record-low border crossings, while the White House celebrates a historic security and enforcement at the U.S.-Mexico border, the New York Post reported

Let’s dive into the figures that have many conservatives nodding in approval. Since President Trump returned to the White House in January 2025, a reported 117,105 migrants have been apprehended at the southern border, all turned away without release into the interior.

Border Crossings Reach Unprecedented Lows

In June, federal agents stopped just 6,070 migrants at the border, marking an all-time low for illegal crossings. Border czar Tom Homan confirmed that none of those apprehended were later released into the country.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem reinforced this achievement, stating earlier in December that her department recorded seven consecutive months without releasing migrants into the U.S. interior as of November’s end.

This stands in sharp contrast to the Biden administration’s average of 185,625 apprehensions per month, according to Customs and Border Protection data.

White House officials are heralding these results as proof of success. They’ve declared the border the “most secure in history,” attributing the deportation of dangerous criminal unauthorized migrants to Trump’s stringent policies.

Crockett Casts Doubt on Claims

Rep. Crockett, however, isn’t joining the celebration. During an interview on NBC News’ “Meet the Press NOW,” she expressed skepticism about the administration’s honesty regarding these reported numbers.

“I will acknowledge that what is being reported is that border encounters are lower,” Crockett said. “I will also say that we know that this administration has not been the most honest when it comes to reporting numbers, as we know that there’s now reporting that they have not been honest about the jobs numbers.”

That’s a serious accusation, and one might question whether Crockett has solid evidence or if this is mere political posturing as she launches her Senate campaign in Texas, where immigration is a critical issue for voters.

Human Cost Raises Eyebrows

Crockett also pointed to darker aspects of the administration’s approach. She highlighted at least 30 migrant deaths in ICE custody in 2025, a concerning rise from 12 in the last full year of Biden’s term and nearing the 32 recorded in 2004.

Additionally, she voiced alarm over what she described as a historic number of American citizens being “rounded up.”

She suggested the Supreme Court has granted the administration unchecked authority to target individuals based on accents or appearance, a claim that merits scrutiny for its breadth.

“What I can tell you is that he has invoked a very inhumane way of carrying out immigration,” Crockett added. While her critique of enforcement as harsh may resonate with some, it overlooks the initial public backing for tougher border measures.

Public Opinion Shifts on Policy

Despite the administration’s touted successes, Trump’s immigration agenda isn’t winning universal praise anymore. Polls aggregated by RealClearPolitics show his approval on the issue dipping by December, with 50.1% disapproving and 46.8% approving, down from early support for deportations and security.

White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson pushed back hard against Crockett’s doubts, calling them a “bizarre conspiracy theory” from someone unprepared to handle factual data.
