Rep. Jeffries demands Reps. Schiff and Swalwell be put on committees

Following the GOP's House victory in last year's midterm elections, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy made clear that three Democrats would be stripped of their committee assignments.

That didn't go over well with newly elected Democratic House Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and he recently demanded that McCarthy reconsider.

Reps. Eric Swalwell and Adam Schiff called "eminently qualified"

According to Fox News, Jeffries sent a letter to the House speaker this past Saturday in which he insisted that California Reps. Eric Swalwell and Adam Schiff are "eminently qualified legislators" who belong on the House Intelligence Committee

"It is my understanding that you intend to break with the longstanding House tradition of deference to the minority party Intelligence Committee recommendations and deny seats to Ranking Member Schiff and Representative Swalwell," Jeffries was quoted as saying.

"The denial of seats to duly elected members of the House Democratic Caucus runs counter to the serious and sober mission of the Intelligence Committee," the New York Democrat continued.

McCarthy: "Swalwell can’t get a security clearance"

Jeffries then attempted to contrast Schiff and Swalwell with Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar, two Republicans who were stripped of their committee assignments by Democrats in 2021.

Greene was accused of promoting violent conspiracy theories while Gosar tweeted out an animated cartoon of him killing New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

"It does not serve as precedent or justification for the removal of Reps. Schiff and Swalwell, given that they have never exhibited violent thoughts or behavior," Jeffries declared.

McCarthy confirmed in an interview with Fox News earlier this month that Schiff and Swalwell would both be getting the boot, as would Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar.

The new speaker pointed to Swalwell's past romantic association with a Chinese spy, saying, "Swalwell can’t get a security clearance in the private sector. I’m not going to give him a government security clearance."

McCarthy went on to complain that "Schiff has lied too many times to the American public," adding, "He should not be on Intel."

Greene and Gosar put back on committees

The California lawmaker also noted that Minnesota Democratic Rep. Omar would lose her committee assignments due a long history of attacking Israel and making remarks that some regard as being antisemitic.

Meanwhile, Breitbart reported last week that Greene will serve on the House Homeland Security Committee and the House Oversight Committee.

Meanwhile, Gosar will also take a seat on the House Oversight Committee as well as the House Natural Resources Committee.
