South Carolina Republican Rep. Nancy Mace has generated headlines in recent weeks over her opposition to transgender individuals using women's bathrooms on Capitol Hill.

That stance has brought outrage from many on the left, with one person even physically assaulting the congresswoman.

Man charged with assaulting a government official

According to Reuters, U.S. Capitol Police arrested 33-year-old Illinois resident James McIntyre in the Rayburn House office building on Wednesday. He has been charged with assaulting a government official.

Mace recounted the event in a social media post, writing, "I was physically accosted tonight on Capitol grounds over my fight to protect women. Capitol police have arrested him."

"All the violence and threats keep proving our point. Women deserve to be safe. Your threats will not stop my fight for women! " she added.

Mace: "You will not bully me into submission"

The controversy arose last month following the election of Delaware Democratic Rep. Sarah McBride, who is the first transgender member of Congress.

"They are threatening to kill me over this. Men that want to use women’s restrooms are threatening to kill me over this issue," The Hill quoted Mace as saying during a November interview with NewsNation's "On Balance."

"I was the first woman to graduate from The Citadel, the military college of South Carolina, and if we haven’t met yet, I want all the bullies online to know you will not bully me into submission," she declared.

The Epoch Times noted that House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed support for Mace in a statement, saying, "All single-sex facilities in the Capitol and House Office Buildings—such as restrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms—are reserved for individuals of that biological sex."

"It is important to note that each Member office has its own private restroom, and unisex restrooms are available throughout the Capitol ... Women deserve women's only spaces," Johnson went on to stress.

AOC says Republicans' stance is "disgusting"

However, the New York Post reported that New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez lashed out at Johnson and Mace.

"If a woman doesn’t look woman enough to Republicans, they want to be able to inspect her genitals to use the bathroom. It's disgusting," Ocasio-Cortez was quoted as telling reporters.

Those remarks brought derision from some social media users, with podcast host Konstantin Kisin calling Ocasio-Cortez' argument "moronic."
