Rep. Ilhan Omar, a radical Democratic "Squad" member from Minnesota, made what she presumably thought was a non-controversial tweet on June 19 for the Juneteenth holiday, but the situation backfired quickly.

According to Newsmax, Omar, who made a post honoring Juneteenth, ultimately deleted the post after she was called out by an X user regarding the slave situation in Somalia, where she's from.

Omar was blasted over the post given that there are still slavery issues in her home country.

The user in question said she should go back to Somalia and "free her own people" before posting about Juneteenth in America.

What happened?

In her original post celebrating Juneteenth, which marks the day slavery ended in 1865, Omar celebrated "Black freedom" and other aspects of the holiday.

It read, "160 years ago on June 19, 1865, slavery ended in this country. Today, we celebrate Black freedom, resilience, and achievement, and continue the work to root out systematic racism from our policies and institutions."

X user Gunther Engleman, a conservative activist who has nearly 1.5 million followers on the platform, quickly called Omar out over her post, writing, "Somalia still has slaves. Ilhan should go fight to free her own people."

The Minnesota lawmaker ultimately deleted her original post, though it's unclear whether it was over his reply or the mountain of other negative feedback she received.

Omar eventually posted a new version of her post celebrating Juneteenth, changing up the language and presumably hoping for less backlash as a result.

The new post

In the new version of her post, Omar pointed out that freedom "is not always swift," but worth fighting for.

"On Juneteenth, we remember that freedom is not always swift but it is always worth the fight. It’s a powerful reminder of how long justice can take to reach those who deserve it most. Today, we celebrate Black freedom, resilience, and achievement, and continue the work to root out systematic racism from our policies and institutions."

Some conservative activists and others took issue with the so-called holiday, instead pointing out that it was the Democratic Party that was responsible for America's slavery issue.

Out of 4 million slaves in 1860, Republicans owned fewer than 100. Ignoring minor third parties, virtually all the slaves in the country were owned by Democrats. This fact absolves the US for slavery and puts the blame squarely where it belongs, on the Democratic Party.
