Report: FBI is investigating Democratic governor over claim that he is harboring an illegal alien
Earlier this year, New Jersey Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy made headlines when he claimed to be harboring an illegal migrant above his garage.
As Western Journal contributor C. Douglas Golden observed in an article published on Tuesday, that claim could get Murphy busted by federal agents.
FBI agents have sought to interview witnesses
Golden cited a report from The New York Times which explained that the governor has been subpoenaed by Alina Habba, who is serving as New Jersey's interim U.S. attorney.
The Times stated that "FBI agents have since sought to interview at least four witnesses in connection with the comments, two of the people said, with one adding that the governor had been subpoenaed but not questioned."
"Two of the people with knowledge of the investigation involving Mr. Murphy’s comments indicated that it was separate from any Justice Department inquiry related to New Jersey’s so-called sanctuary policy, which has been upheld by a federal appeals court. There has been no public sign of that inquiry moving forward," the newspaper continued.
The Times indicated that it has spoken with someone described as being close to Murphy who said that the governor is unaware of any investigation.
What's more, Murphy's office declined to comment on the matter, as did a spokeswoman for the acting U.S. attorney.
White House border czar: Murphy confessed to breaking federal law
The FBI isn't alone in taking notice of Murphy's comments, as White House Border Czar Thom Homan highlighted them earlier this year.
JUST IN: Border Czar Tom Homan says he plans on going after NJ Governor Phil Murphy who taunted the Trump admin when he revealed that he was housing an illegal immigrant.
Murphy: We are housing an illegal above our garage. Good luck to the Feds who will try to get her.

"I think the governor is pretty foolish," Homan told Fox News host Sean Hannity during a February interview. "I got note of it, won’t let it go. We’ll look into it."
"And if he’s knowingly -- knowingly -- harboring, concealing an illegal alien, that’s a violation of Title 8, United States Code 1324. I would seek prosecution, or the secretary would seek prosecution," Homan added.
Governor now claims that "no one's ever lived in the home"
Meanwhile, Golden pointed out how Murphy later began backtracking from his previous boast of hiding an illegal migrant at his residence.
A representative for the Democratic governor insisted to the Times that Murphy's earlier statement had been "misinterpreted."
"No one’s ever lived in the home," the spokesperson continued before declaring that the person whom Murphy was speaking of is in the United States legally.
