Report: Harris' vetting team meets privately with Shapiro, Kelly before veep announcement
The more speculation that surrounds the choosing of Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate the more frustration arises, from both major political parties.
With the Democrat nomination now firmly in Harris' grasp the idea of who she will run with could spell the difference between a win and a loss to former President Donald Trump in November.
A recent report by Fox News states that Harris' vetting team had a private meeting with two leading candidates to run alongside the presumed Democratic nominee on the 2024 ticket.
This meeting took place just a few days before a last-minute decision is to be made regarding the selection of the vice presidential candidate.
The Meetings
With the candidate pool being narrowed down by the screening process, Politico reported on Thursday that Harris' team apparently spoke with both the governor of Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro, and the senator from Arizona, Mark Kelly, who is a Democrat.
Despite being questioned by Fox News Digital about whether or whether Harris's screening team also met with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who is also being considered for the role, the campaign did not provide any information.
Although there are still a number of contenders in the running, Harris is anticipated to make her announcement regarding her running companion as soon as Monday.
On Tuesday, the newly formed duo will participate in their first campaign rally in Philadelphia, which will mark the beginning of a four-day tour of battleground states. Located in Montgomery County, just outside of Philadelphia, Shapiro is one of her main candidates was born and raised.
Guesswork
As a result of the fact that a vice presidential nominee has not been declared in their home state for the past few election cycles, there has been a lot of conjecture that the governor of Pennsylvania would be the preferred candidate currently in the running.
The governor of North Carolina, Roy Cooper, the secretary of transportation, Pete Buttigieg, and the governor of Kentucky, Andy Beshear, are all high on Harris's list of potential vice president candidates.
In a recent interview with NBC News, Ashley Etienne, who had previously served as the communications director for Harris, stated that she believes Kelly is the best candidate for the role.
On Kelly
This week, the senator from a battleground state intensified his criticism of the Trump-Vance ticket, appearing to be anxious to portray himself as the "pit bull" that campaign strategists aspire to.
While avoiding inquiries about the vice president, Kelly swiftly criticized the GOP immigration reform ticket during Wednesday's MSNBC Morning Joe.
“We can’t have four more years of Donald Trump, especially with J.D. Vance one heartbeat away from the presidency,” the Democrat said.
In other comments from this week, Kelly told reporters that Trump had made the world “a more dangerous place.”
