Report: Maryland Republicans will sue over Democratic redistricting plans
Last year saw Republican Rep. Andy Harris become the only GOP member of Congress to represent one of Maryland's eight districts.
Yet Maryland's Democratic governor now has intentions of eliminating Harris' seat with a new redistricting plan.
Governor announcing redistricting commission
That's according to Just the News, which reported this past weekend that Maryland Republicans are preparing to mount a legal challenge against Gov. Wes Moore.
The governor has put together a Redistricting Advisory Commission which is tasked with coming up with new electoral boundaries ahead of next year's midterms.
Moore justified the advisory commission's creation in a press release he put out earlier this month, saying, "My commitment has been clear from day one—we will explore every avenue possible to make sure Maryland has fair and representative maps."
"This commission will ensure the people are heard. I thank those who have raised their hands to lead this process, and I am confident in their ability to gather the views and perspectives of a broad range of voices throughout the state," he insisted.
Commission to be chaired by anti-Trump state senator
The governor announced that the commission will be chaired by state Democratic Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, who is known as a fierce critic of President Donald Trump.
Today, I’m announcing the Governor’s Redistricting Advisory Commission.

"We have a President that treats our democracy with utter contempt. We have a Republican Party that is trying to rig the rules in response to their terrible polling," Alsobrooks said in the press release.
"Let me be clear: Maryland deserves a fair map that represents the will of the people. That's why I'm proud to chair this commission. Our democracy depends on all of us standing up in this moment," she added.
California Democrats also plan to edge out Republicans
Maryland is not the only state where Democrats are redrawing the electoral map in order to edge out their Republican rivals, as California is as well.
Last week saw California voters pass Proposition 50, a ballot initiative which will suspend the state's nonpartisan redistricting commission and allow Democratic lawmakers to redraw its congressional districts.
The move was championed by California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, who promoted it as a response to similar redistricting efforts in Texas that could produce five new Republican-leaning seats.
"You woke us up," The Texas Tribune quoted Newsom as telling a gathering of Democrats in Houston. "You didn’t just have your back here, you had our back in the state of California."
