Report: Melania Trump is picking up fans in China despite growing tensions
This month has seen China impose new tariffs on American goods in retaliation for similar actions taken by President Donald Trump.
However, the growing tensions have not prevented First Lady Melania Trump from winning attention in Asia's largest nation.
Professor: Chinese women see Mrs. Trump as both traditional and modern
That's according to the Associated Press, which cited comments from Hofstra University associate professor of media studies Jingsi Wu.
"Chinese fans like her having both traditional and modern sides of a woman," Wu was quoted as saying in an article published earlier this week.
Rose LuQiu is an associate professor at Hong Kong Baptist University's School of Communication, and she indicated that the first lady also helps to burnish her husband's image.
"The more independent and accomplished she is — but still unwaveringly loyal to (Donald) Trump — the more it reflects his perceived success as a man," LuQiu explained.
Chinese fashion industry figure says "people want to know more about" Mrs. Trump
Among the first lady's admirers is 24-year-old Ge Yahan, who makes money by selling unauthorized copies of the first lady's autobiography that have been translated into Mandarin by artificial intelligence.
Our lives are shaped by our experiences, challenges, and achievements. For the first time, I share my journey with you, in my new memoir, Melania.

Yahan is impressed by the fact that Mrs. Trump rose from humble beginnings in Slovenia to become the wife of an American president.
Fashion industry public relations consultant Huang Li also sells copies of the first lady's autobiography, and she told the Associated Press that "people want to know more about" the first lady.
Yet another fan of Mrs. Trump is 39-year-old Joyce Yip, a female entrepreneur who resides in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou.
Chinese businesswoman contrasts "very loyal" Melania with "traitor" Ivana
Yip praised Mrs. Trump following her husband's inauguration in a post on the Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu, writing, "She looks heroic, elegant and resolute, so powerful and majestic, loving it so much."
"Melania is a woman who is low-key, very real, supports her husband in the back and stands with him when he needs her," Yip added.
"The rules of this society are that men are allowed to be disloyal, but not women. Melania is very loyal to her husband," Yip stressed.
In contrast, Yip regards President Trump's eldest daughter, Ivana Trump, as being "a traitor" for having given testimony in her father's civil fraud trial two years ago.
