Former Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has been plagued by a number of health scares in recent years, including multiple falls.

McConnell's family avoided tragedy once again this week when the 82-year-old lawmaker suffered only minor injuries after taking another tumble.

McConnell seen with cut on the left side of his face after GOP lunch

According to Punch Bowl News founder John Bresnahan sustained a cut to the left side of his face when he fell after a Senate Republican lunch on Tuesday.

The incident came 17 months after McConnell fell while disembarking from a plane at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The longtime senator had previously fallen in March of 2023, resulting in a concussion and a minor rib fracture.

What's more, McConnell sustained a fracture in his shoulder due to a 2019 fall at his home in Louisville, Kentucky. In addition to his falls, McConnell has also been observed freezing up at public events.

McConnell revealed his decision to step down earlier this year

Meanwhile, Fox News reported this past February that McConnell announced his intention to step down as GOP senate leader and leave politics altogether when his term expires in January of 2027.

"One of life’s most underappreciated talents is to know when it’s time to move on to life’s next chapter," McConnell was quoted as saying in a speech from the Senate floor.

"So I stand before you today... to say that this will be my last term as Republican leader of the Senate," the Kentucky lawmaker continued.

"As I have been thinking about when I would deliver some news to the Senate, I always imagined a moment when I had total clarity and peace about the sunset of my work," he stressed.

"A moment when I am certain I have helped preserve the ideals I so strongly believe. It arrived today," McConnell went on to add.

McConnell's replacement says GOP is "united behind President Trump's agenda"

McConnell was replaced as GOP leader last month by former Senate Minority Whip John Thune following a secret ballot on Capitol Hill.

Thune won the position by beating out Florida Republican Sen. Rick Scott along with Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn.

Fox News quoted the South Dakota senator as saying in a statement that he was "extremely honored to have earned the support" of his colleagues and promised that Republicans are "united behind President Trump's agenda."
