Report reveals Dems want Senate filibuster gone

Even some of the most vulnerable Democrats in the U.S. Senate want to put an end to the filibuster.

This is according to a new report from Fox News.

This all comes after Vice President Kamala Harris - the Democratic Party's 2024 presidential nominee - made it clear that she is in favor of ending the filibuster, at least temporarily.

Harris said:

I've been very clear, I think we should eliminate the filibuster for Roe, and get us to the point where 51 votes would be what we need to actually put back in law the protections for reproductive freedom and for the ability of every person and every woman to make decisions about their own body and not have their government tell them what to do.

She's not alone

Fox, in its report, reveals that vulnerable Senate democrats are on Harris's side with regard to this issue.

Per the outlet:

Sens. Jon Tester, D-Mont., Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, Bob Casey, D-Pa., Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., and Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., all voted to change the rules in 2022 to allow a bill that would loosen federal voting requirements to be passed by a simple majority, which Democrats had in the Senate.

Fox went on to back this up with statements from each of these individuals.

Some are now trying to push back, which is not surprising considering that this is a radical idea and the 2024 election is right around the corner.

It is something that we should all keep in mind when heading to the ballot box.

Background

If you are less familiar with what happens in the U.S. Senate, you might think that all that is required to pass a piece of legislation through the upper chamber is a simple majority of 51 votes. This is not true, although there are exceptions.

Instead, the Senate filibuster required there to be a 60-vote consensus before a bill can be advanced for a final vote.

The Democrats, over the years, have made various pushes to get rid of the filibuster in order to force legislation through. The most recent example was in 2022.

Fox reports:

In 2022, both moderate Sens. Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz., and Manchin bucked Democrats to join Republicans in preventing the rule change that would have allowed Democrats to pass the voting requirements bill with the party's razor-thin majority. The senators were both Democrats at the time but subsequently left the party to become independents. They each later announced they wouldn't seek re-election.

It is appearing more and more likely that Democrats will end the filibuster as soon as the opportunity presents itself.
