This past weekend saw the one year anniversary of an assassination attempt on President Donald Trump that killed one of his supporters.

However, the weekend also saw disturbing new revelations concerning what the Secret Service knew ahead of that tragic day.

Secret Service was aware of "highly classified" threats

According to the New York Post, Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley released a report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) which found that the Secret Service was aware of threats ahead of Trump's campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The Post noted that Secret Service officials characterized the threats as being "highly classified" in nature and provided no details concerning it.

Despite this, the report explained that "the Secret Service had no process to share classified threat information with partners when the information was not considered an imminent threat to life."

"Secret Service and local law enforcement personnel central to developing site security plans for the rally were unaware of the threat," it continued.

Official said he would have "requested additional assets" had he known of threat

What's more, the Secret Service’s special agent in charge of the Pittsburgh field office informed the GAO investigators that he was not made aware of any threat either.

"He reported that if he had received the threat information, he would have requested additional assets, such as ballistic glass, additional drone mitigation, and a full counter sniper advance team, among other assets," the report asserted.

For his part, Grassley said in a statement "a series of bad decisions and bureaucratic handicaps led to one of the most shocking moments in political history."

"Americans should be grateful that President Trump survived that day and was ultimately reelected to restore common sense to our country," he added.

Six Secret Service agents have been suspended

Release of the GAO's report came just days after the New York Post revealed that six Secret Service agents have been suspended over their handling of the assassination attempt.

Among them is Myosoty Perez, who was a member of Trump's security detail and could be seen in multiple photographs taken at the rally.

Attorney Larry Berger is representing Perez, and he indicated that his client "has fully cooperated already through all the investigations into the matter and she is now deciding what the next steps will be in this situation."
