Reps. Nancy Mace and Jasmine Crockett torch each other during House hearing
Aside from several firey Senate confirmation hearings as President-elect Donald Trump's nominees face down angry and bitter Senate Democrats, the House experienced a dose of drama this week as well.
According to the Daily Caller, during a committee hearing regarding civil rights and biological men in women's spaces, two lawmakers nearly went toe-to-toe, causing quite a stir as the new session of Congress gears up to begin the next chapter.
Republican South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace and Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett entered into a heated shouting match after butting heads on the civil rights issue.
The fireworks happened as Chairman James Comer (R-KY) convened the House Oversight Committee, which included current and new members of the committee.
What happened?
Roughly two hours into the hearing, Crockett used some of her time to urge the committee to launch a subcommittee that focuses solely on civil rights.
"I’m asking you to do the courageous thing today and just institute a subcommittee that would make sure that we are looking out for those protections of everyone in this country. To make sure that we have real freedom, something we all supposedly espouse to believe in," Crockett said.
Mace took the floor right after Crockett, and called her urging "rich" before torching her request.
"Coming from a party that can’t define what a woman is and won’t give women the right to privacy. You all want men with penises — chicks with d**ks — in the bathroom with us. You want women to be forced to undress in front of men in the locker room and in dressing rooms," Mace snapped back.
She wasn't done there, adding, "It’s so hypocritical for you to sit here and say and be, you know, screaming from the rooftops about the right to privacy and civil rights when you don’t respect women."
One of the other Democrats returned their time back to Crockett, who said, "Somebody’s campaign coffers really are struggling right now, so she gonna keep saying trans, trans, trans, so that people will feel threatened and child, listen, I want y’all to tell me —."
Mace jumps back in
At that moment, Mace, a rape survivor who doesn't believe biological men should share bathrooms or locker rooms with women, immediately cut her off.
“I am no child! Do not call me a child! I am no child! Don’t even start. I am a grown woman who’s 47-years-old. I have broken more glass ceilings than you have —," Mace yelled, adding that the two could "take it outside" if Crockett wanted.
The hearing was shortly after the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act was passed in the Republican-controlled House.
If this is any indication as to what's to come in the next session of Congress, we all need to buckle up.
