Republican Michael Burgess Announces Eldest Daughter Passed Away In Her Sleep
House Rules Committee Chairman Michael Burgess (R-TX) announced that his daughter, Christine Burgess, had died in her sleep.
An announcement on Burgess's X account stated, "It’s with heavy hearts we regret to share that Congressman Burgess’ eldest daughter, Christine Burgess passed away in her sleep this past weekend."
The statement continued saying, "Congressman Burgess appreciates all of the thoughts & prayers & respectfully requests privacy for his family at this difficult time."
Burgess, who is 73, is about to end his 22 years in Congress after deciding not to run for another term and will retire at the end of this Congressional session.
Burgess is a doctor of obstetrics and gynecology but will likely be fully retired when he leaves Congress as he is quite elderly after decades in Washington D.C.
Tragic Passing
The outpouring of support from Burgess's fellow congressional members was swift as many Republicans issued their condolences.
House Speaker Mike Johnson issued a statement on Burgess's passing saying, "It is with deep sadness that we share the tragic news about the passing of Congressman Burgess’ beloved daughter, Christine. Our hearts and our prayers go out to our dear friend and colleague and his family at this very difficult time."
Representative-elect Brandon Gill, who just won the race to replace Burgess, also issued a statement saying, "Please join Danielle and me in praying for Dr. Burgess and his family."
No details were given as to what caused Christine Burgess's death and it appears that her family is keeping the situation private.
It is possible that she was battling long-term health issues as Michael Burgess announced he would be retiring last year with little explanation.
A statement from Burgess on his decision to retire stated, "It has been the honor of my life to have gone from a small-town doctor delivering babies, with no prior political experience, to elected to represent my friends and neighbors in the United States Congress."
Replacing Burgess In Congress
Burgess has been a powerful member of the GOP's House delegation as he has chaired several important committees and has made an impact on energy and health care policy.
One reason that could explain his decision to step aside while reaching the peak of his influence is that Burgess didn't believe in staying in politics too long. He told the Texas Tribune that, "The founders never intended for these to be permanent jobs."
Perhaps Burgess chose the right time to retire as dealing with the death of his daughter will be difficult and he will need time with his family, time that he now has in excess now that he is done in Congress.
