A famous opera house could soon be renamed after Melania Trump if a new Republican bill becomes law.

Republicans voted Tuesday to name the Kennedy Center's Opera House after the First Lady, escalating an effort by Trump and MAGA allies to remake the nation's cultural center. The opera house's new name would be "First Lady Melania Trump Opera House."

An amendment to rename the theater passed 33-25 as part of a spending bill in the House Appropriations Committee. A lone Democrat, Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, joined all Republicans in the otherwise partisan vote.

Melania's opera house?

The Opera House is the second largest theater in the performing arts center, which also has a venue named after President Eisenhower.

Trump made himself the Kennedy Center's chairman earlier this year, after firing its board members. The president's takeover has sparked furious pushback from critics, who say Trump is imposing an agenda on a national institution dedicated to free expression.

But Trump says the Kennedy Center has gone astray, slamming its programming as excessively "woke" as he touts plans for a new "Golden Age" in arts and culture.

"Just last year, the Kennedy Center featured Drag Shows specifically targeting our youth — THIS WILL STOP," Trump wrote in a post.

By tradition, the First Lady is honorary chair of the Kennedy Center. But Representative Mike Simpson (R-ID), chairman of the House Interior and Environment Appropriations Subcommittee, said Melania deserves additional honors.

Renaming the opera house, he said, is "an excellent way to recognize [the first lady's] support and commitment to promoting the arts."

Trump's vision

Trump surged spending for the Kennedy Center in his mega bill, allocating $250 million, roughly six times what the center usually receives, in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

The real estate mogul has touted the Kennedy Center's "tremendous potential" as a cultural center, while expressing dismay at its current condition.

“Kennedy Center is in tremendous disrepair, as is a lot of the rest of our country, most of it because of bad management. This is a shame, what I’ve watched and witnessed,” Trump said during a tour in March. “So I’m very disappointed when I look around. The bottom line is, it has tremendous potential.”

The president attended a performance of the musical "Les Misérables" at the Kennedy Center in June with his glamorous wife. Trump is also known to be a fan of the opera singer Pavarotti and his iconic performance of the triumphant aria "Nessun Dorma," which Trump has often played at rallies.

The reclusive First Lady has been credited as one of Trump's closest advisers. Trump's recent pivot in the Ukraine war has been attributed to his wife's influence, with Melania receiving praise for convincing her husband to get tougher on Vladimir Putin.
