Resolution to reprimand Rep. Omar over Charlie Kirk comments fails in 214-213 vote

While some Democrats in Congress remained respectful and, in some cases, sympathetic, after the tragic and horrifying assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, many of them took a different path.

One of those was "Squad" member Ilhan Omar, a radical left Democrat from Minnesota, who made disgusting comments about Kirk and his cold-blooded murder shortly after it happened.

According to The Hill, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) made an effort to have Omar formally reprimanded for her nasty words about Kirk, which included stripping Omar of her committee assignments, but unfortunately fell short of the support needed to make it happen.

The House of Representatives tabled a resolution brought forth by Mace that would have formally reprimanded Omar, and the worst news is that four Republicans helped make that happen.

What happened?

Omar and Mace traded insults after the radical, progressive Democrat made a number of sickening remarks regarding Kirk's assassination.

“Ilhan Omar should be stripped of her seat and her citizenship," Mace said in one X post. Omar fired back in several posts, saying Mace is not "well or smart," and even suggested that she "belongs in rehab, not Congress."

Mace, in a video, highlighted some of Omar's comments regarding Kirk's death.

The Hill noted:

That video said Kirk “took complex socioeconomic issues and simplified them by pointing fingers at out-groups, demonizing those groups, and siccing his massive following on them,” calling him a “stochastic terrorist” and an “adamant transphobe.” It adds that Kirk, whose suspected killer has been described as left-wing by government officials, “was Dr. Frankenstein and his monster shot him through the neck.”

Omar argued that none of the words in the resolution to censure her were her own, adding that she believes Mace was using the moment to fundraise for her upcoming run for governor of South Carolina .

Regardless, the resolution nearly passed, being defeated in a 214-213 vote, thanks to four Republican House members who voted with Democrats.

Who turned?

The four Republicans who voted against censuring and punishing Omar included "Reps. Mike Flood (Neb.), Jeff Hurd (Colo.), Tom McClintock (Calif.) and Rep. Cory Mills (Fla.)."

Primarily, their argument was that while Omar's words were nothing short of disgusting, they were also still protected by the First Amendment.

"Omar’s comments were not made in the House and even if they were, they broke no House rules," McClintock said.

The four Republicans took plenty of heat across social media for voting with the other side in saving Omar. We'll see how that works out for them down the road.
