While there has been widespread speculation over who Donald Trump will pick as his running mate, a longtime ally of the former president suggested a name this week that few have mentioned.

According to the Washington Examiner, conservative commentator Roger Stone said on Thursday that former California Republican Rep. Devin Nunes would make an "excellent" vice president.

Stone says Nunes is someone Trump "trusts entirely"

Stone made that argument during an interview with Newsmax host Eric Bolling, carefully laying out Nunes' credentials.

"[He’s a] 20-year member of Congress, former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, someone Donald Trump is very close to and trusts entirely," Stone noted.

Stone went on to highlight Nunes' Latino heritage along with his experience as a farmer, stating, "I think he would be an excellent choice."

The Examiner recalled how Nunes resigned from Congress two years ago in order to help found Trump's social media company.

New York Post columnist points to three possible contenders

Stone is hardly alone in discussing who might join Trump on this year's Republican ticket, as New York Post contributor Daniel McCarthy also addressed the issue in a piece published on Monday.

One figure McCarthy brought up was former New York Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin, who ran for governor of his home state in his home state.

Although Zeldin ultimately lost to New York Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul, McCarthy pointed out how he did better than expected in what is a deep blue state.

McCarthy maintained that Zeldin could help down-ballot Republicans win in marginal districts thereby driving up turnout. What's more, the fact that Zeldin is Jewish could be an asset given how many Democrats are adopting a pro-Palestinian stance.

Elise Stefanik and Byron Donalds known for their loyalty to Trump

Two other names that McCarthy mentioned are New York Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik and Florida Republican Rep. Byron Donalds.

Stefanik made headlines when filed an ethics complaint against a federal judge who has issued decisions in cases involving Trump as well as January 6 defendants.

Meanwhile, McCarthy described Donald as being "fiercely loyal" in his defense of Trump, with the congressman vigorously campaigning for him in the primary race.
