According to a new report from the Washington Post, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and his team are preparing to make a run for the U.S. presidency in 2024. 

To many Republicans, this will come as good news, as they see DeSantis as the future of the Republican Party.

But, there is one Republican who will not be happy about this, and that is former President Donald Trump.

It's happening

The Post, for its report, cites several anonymous Republican insiders who claim to have first-hand knowledge of what DeSantis and his team are up to.

According to two of the Post's sources, DeSantis's advisers "are actively preparing for a possible presidential run," and DeSantis is "laying a foundation for a national campaign."

The Post reports:

DeSantis’s political team has already identified multiple potential hires in early primary states such as New Hampshire and Iowa, according to one of the Republicans, who said experienced operatives have expressed interest. This Republican also said that Phil Cox and Generra Peck — two key members of DeSantis’s 2022 reelection team — are involved in ongoing talks about 2024.

The Post also reports that advisers of DeSantis have met just recently to discuss a 2024 run.

It was anticipated

That DeSantis is gearing up for a presidential run will not come as a surprise to many. DeSantis, for some time now, has clearly been positioning himself for a presidential run. And, he clearly has the support of many Republicans.

Polls have consistently indicated that DeSantis and Trump are the two top candidates to represent the Republican Party in 2024. In fact, the polls suggest that none of the other Republicans who are considering such a run - such as former Vice President Mike Pence, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo - are even close to Trump and DeSantis.

As for Trump v. DeSantis, different polls have given different results. Many polls have Trump defeating DeSantis easily in the Republican 2024 primary. Other polls have DeSantis either tied or slightly ahead of Trump.

In other words, Trump v. DeSantis appears as though it will be a hotly contested matchup - if it does happen.

"DeSanctimonious"

The one person who is going to be most unhappy about a Trump v. DeSantis matchup appears to be Trump. Trump, over the weekend - at one of his first major 2024 campaign events - warned DeSantis not to seek out the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, saying that it would be "a great act of disloyalty."

Trump followed this up with a social media post in which he gave a potential preview of the Trump v. DeSantis 2024 matchup, writing, "The revelations about Ron DeSanctimonious doing FAR WORSE than many other Republican governors, including that he unapologetically shut down Florida and its beaches, was interesting, indeed. DJT leading BIG!!!"

If the Post's reporting is true - and a DeSantis presidential run is coming - then it would appear that a blockbuster matchup between Trump and DeSantis is on the horizon.
