Ron DeSantis unharmed after car crash

Florida governor Ron DeSantis' (R) motorcade was involved in a chain reaction car crash on Tuesday morning while he was campaigning in Tennessee.

A woman on the governor's staff received minor injuries. Nobody else was hurt including the governor.

"This morning, the governor was in a car accident while traveling to an event in Chattanooga, Tennessee," DeSantis press Secretary Bryan Griffin said in a statement. "He and his team are uninjured."

DeSantis unharmed after crash

There were few details about the I-75 crash, which happened moments before a fundraiser scheduled for 8:30 a.m in Chattanooga. DeSantis ultimately went to the fundraiser.

The police said the crash was caused by a slowdown in traffic, which led to a rear-end collision involving multiple cars in DeSantis' motorcade.

"The motorcade came up on slow traffic, and the lead vehicle had to brake quickly, which caused a rear-end collision involving the other vehicles," the police said. "All the vehicles involved were government vehicles accompanying Gov. DeSantis and his team to his scheduled event."

The female staffer who was injured went to the fundraiser, where she was treated.

"We appreciate the prayers and well wishes of the nation for his continued protection while on the campaign trail," Griffin added.

Campaign struggles

The car crash happened on the same day that the campaign announced it was laying off a third of its staff. The DeSantis campaign says they are recalibrating to a smaller "insurgent" operation after burning through big donor cash and struggling to close the gap with President Trump.

“Every time he [DeSantis] has been underestimated, written off, or dismissed, he has proven his enemies wrong,” DeSantis' campaign manager Generra Peck said.

Donors flocked to the governor months ago when he was seen as the only viable Republican alternative to President Trump. But concerns about DeSantis' relatability - and electability - have crept in since his highly anticipated campaign launch in May, leaving donors and allies with second thoughts.

DeSantis was forced to cancel two fundraisers in the Hamptons last weekend after people lost interest. Another fundraiser was lightly attended.

“The DeSantis experiment is dead,” one source told the New York Post. “Donors aren’t coming to his events because they don’t see any return on investment.”
