Rosalynn Carter, the former first lady and the wife of former President Jimmy Carter, has been placed into hospice care.

The Carter Center indicated as much in a press release that it published on Friday, Nov. 17, 2023. The statement is on behalf of Jason Carter, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter's grandson.

"Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter has entered hospice care at home. She and President Carter are spending time with each other and their family," the press release states.

It continues, "The Carter family continues to ask for privacy and remains grateful for the outpouring of love and support."

Jimmy Carter's entrance into hospice care

Rosalynn Carter now enters hospice care roughly nine months after her husband was put into the same.

The announcement that the 99-year-old former president was being placed in hospice care was made in February by the Carter Center.

"After a series of short hospital stays, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention," the announcement read.

It continued, "He has the full support of his family and his medical team. The Carter family asks for privacy during this time and is grateful for the concern shown by his many admirers."

An update about Jimmy Carter's situation came in September, just ahead of the former president's Oct. 1 birthday. Jason Carter told the New York Times:

We thought at the beginning of this process that it was going to be in five or so days. I was down there with him in the hospital and then said goodbye. And, then, we thought it was going to be in that week that it was coming to the end. And, it’s just now been seven months.

Rosalynn Carter is diagnosed with dementia

Now, Rosalynn Carter is joining her husband in hospice care.

The precise reason why the decision was made to put Rosalynn Carter into hospice care is unknown.

But, it is known that, back in May 2023, the former first lady was diagnosed with dementia.

In a press release, at the time, the Carter family wrote, "The Carter family is sharing that former First Lady Rosalynn Carter has dementia. She continues to live happily at home with her husband, enjoying spring in Plains and visits with loved ones."

The hope now is that Rosalynn Carter will do just as well in hospice care as her husband has been doing.
