Russian foreign minister 'not happy' about allegedly leaked Trump peace plan
Since it began in 2022, President-elect Donald Trump has repeatedly said that the war between Russia and Ukraine must come to an end.
However, allegedly leaked details of a plan that is said to have been put forward by Trump's advisers has met with opposition from the Russian government.
Russian foreign minister "not happy" with alleged Trump proposal
That's according to Fox News, which cited an interview given this week by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to the state-run news agency TASS.
Lavrov asserted that the plan involves suspending "hostilities along the line of contact and transfer responsibility for confrontation with Russia to the Europeans."
"We are not happy, of course, with the proposals made by members of the Trump team to postpone Ukraine’s admission to NATO for 20 years and to station British and European peacekeeping forces in Ukraine," he said.
"Those who accuse Russia of various doings should be advised to look in the mirror instead," Lavrov later went on to add.
He then accused "NATO military and mercenaries" of have "openly" participated "in the planning of combat operations and fighting on the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine."
Trump did not reference NATO in interview, condemned missile strikes
"NATO is complicit in the invasion of the Kursk Region and long-range missile strikes inside Russia. President Vladimir Putin made this very clear in his recent public statements," Lavrov insisted.
Lavrov claimed to have learned of the proposed deal via "leaks" as well as the interview Trump had with Time magazine.
Yet as Fox News pointed out, Trump did not make any references to NATO when speaking with the publication and opposed recent Ukrainian missile strikes on Russian territory.
"I disagree very vehemently with sending missiles hundreds of miles into Russia. Why are we doing that?" the president-elect was quoted as saying.
Putin: "We are ready, but the other side needs to be ready"
"We're just escalating this war and making it worse…[but] I want to reach an agreement, and the only way you're going to reach an agreement is not to abandon," Trump declared.
Fox News noted how for his part, Putin indicated just over a week ago during an interview that there is a possibility for compromise with Trump and Ukraine.
"We are ready, but the other side needs to be ready for both negotiations and compromises," Putin remarked. "We have always said that we are ready for negotiations and compromises."
