President-elect Donald Trump's election victory earlier this month has brought an emotional reaction from many on the left.

One example of that phenomenon came last week when an editor at Scientific American resigned after making a series of heated comments.

Editor announces departure on left-wing social media platform

According to NPR, Laura Helmuth announced her departure via a post on the left-wing social media platform Bluesky.

I’ve decided to leave Scientific American after an exciting 4.5 years as editor in chief. I’m going to take some time to think about what comes next (and go birdwatching), but for now I’d like to share a very small sample of the work I’ve been so proud to support (thread)

"I've decided to leave Scientific American after an exciting 4.5 years as editor in chief," Helmuth declared this past Friday.

"I'm going to take some time to think about what comes next (and go birdwatching), but for now I'd like to share a very small sample of the work I’ve been so proud to support," she continued before linking to a number of Scientific American.

Helmuth called Trump voters "the meanest, dumbest, most bigoted" people

Scientific American president Kimberly Lau confirmed Helmuth's decision to leave in a statement which read, "Laura Helmuth has decided to move on from her position as editor in chief."

Lau concluded by saying, "We thank Laura for her four years leading Scientific American, during which time the magazine won major science communication awards and established a reimagined digital newsroom. We wish her well in the future."

NPR noted that Helmuth had previously railed against the incoming president and his supporters in a series of Bluesky posts.

This included decrying Trump supporters as being "the meanest, dumbest, most bigoted" people as well as calling them "f--king fascists."

Helmuth subsequently posted an apology, writing, "These posts, which I have deleted, do not reflect my beliefs; they were a mistaken expression of shock and confusion about the election results."

John Fetterman tells fellow Democrats to stop "freaking out"

Meanwhile, Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman said during a recent interview with NBC News that members of his party should "chill out."

"I've said this before, it’s like, clutch those pearls harder and scold louder — that's not going to win. And that's been demonstrated in this cycle," Fetterman told the network.

"If you're already exhausted, freaking out, and it's not even Thanksgiving, then you really ought to pace yourselves. Because he hasn't even been inaugurated yet," he added.
