Secret Service agents open fire on man brandishing firearm near White House

There was quite a bit of excitement near the grounds of the White House over the weekend that resulted in shots fired by the U.S. Secret Service.

According to Breitbart, an adult male who was seen brandishing a firearm was shot by Secret Service agents late on Sunday evening, shortly after midnight.

The encounter between the Secret Service and the armed male reportedly occurred at 17th and F Streets NW.

Other outlets reported that local police had earlier reported a "suicidal individual" who was traveling from Indiana to the nation's capital.

What's going on?

The individual in question was spotted by a person on foot, and the Secret Service located the individual's vehicle.

Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi released a statement on the encounter and posted an update on the agency's X account.

The statement read, "On Sunday, March 9th, an adult male was shot by U.S. Secret Service personnel following an armed confrontation with law enforcement in Washington, DC."

"Earlier on Saturday, local police shared information about a suicidal individual who may be traveling to Washington DC from Indiana. Around midnight, members of the Secret Service encountered the individual’s parked vehicle near 17th and F Streets, NW. They also saw an individual on foot matching the description nearby."

It continued, "As officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel. The suspect was transported to an area hospital and his condition is unknown. There were no reported injuries to Secret Service personnel."

Under investigation

The agency noted that the situation was still under investigation.

"The incident is under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department Internal Affairs Division’s Force Investigations Team, which investigates all law enforcement officer involved shootings in the District of Columbia," the agency's statement read.

At the time of the shooting encounter, President Donald Trump was reportedly at his home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, and nobody else was injured during the encounter.

It was unclear at the time of published what the suspect's condition was.
