Secret Service closes park in Vance's neighborhood

The U.S. Secret Service recently closed a park near the home of U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH).

According to a new report from the Daily Beast, Vance's neighbors are not too happy about the situation.

In fact, they would appear to be directing their ire at Vance, former President Donald Trump's running mate in the 2024 presidential election.

The park that is being caused is Judy Lowe Park in Alexandria, Virginia.

Here is what is going on:

ALX Now, a local news outlet, reports that, technically speaking, it is the city of Alexandria that is closing the park. However, the city is doing so in response to a request from the Secret Service.

Alexandria has, according to the outlet, released a public statement on the matter. It, in part, reads:

Beginning Sunday, August 25, and in response to a request from the United States Secret Service (USSS), the Judy Lowe Neighborhood Park, located at 1 & 7 E. Del Ray Ave., will be temporarily closed until further notice. Additionally, the unit block of E. Del Ray Ave. (between Commonwealth Ave. and Clyde Ave.) will be restricted to resident traffic only.

The city, in its notice - which can be found in its entirety here -goes on to list "conditions" that "will be in effect during the closure," including "a significant [Secret Service] presence in the area, among other things.

The statement makes it clear that the Secret Service is doing all of this to "provide security for a Secret Service Protectee."

Considering that Vance's home is located right near the park, it is safe to assume that the closing of the park has something to do with Vance, although the statement does not specifically state this.

Vance targeted by his neighbors

According to the Daily Beast, Vance's neighbors are not happy about the situation.

An individual who idefinitifed himself as Thomas Blackwood said:

I am all for protecting people, but if that park is such a danger, he should probably move. The park belongs to the city and the people of Alexandria not his protection staff. And, to be perfectly honest, a true Republican would not want the government infringing on other people’s rights.

Others shared this sentiment. However, some took an opposing view.

One individual, for example, said:

Oh for goodness sakes. Enough. The man is running for VP of the United States. No matter your political affiliation you should be proud your neighbor is willing to run for office. Shame on you for being so ugly.

Vance has not, at the time of this writing, released a statement on the matter.
