Secret Service whistleblower claims agency is blocking inspector general auditors access to certain Trump events

In the wake of the July 13 assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump, a call went out from Congress for U.S. Secret Service whistleblowers to come forward while the Department of Homeland Security's Inspector General launched an investigation into the incident.

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) has just revealed that, according to one whistleblower, the Secret Service has been blocking the IG's auditors from attending certain Trump events to hide that he is not always receiving adequate protections, the New York Post reported.

That revelation runs counter to the public claims from Secret Service and DHS leadership that the former president is at all times receiving the same level of security as the sitting president.

"New whistleblower information troublingly contradicts your public statements"

In a press release on Wednesday, Sen. Hawley announced that he'd sent letters to both Secret Service Acting Director Ronald Rowe and DHS IG Joseph Cuffari to share with them the new claim from a whistleblower that "Secret Service leadership is denying government auditors access to certain events in an effort to hide the fact former President Trump is not getting the highest level of protection."

In his letter to Rowe, the senator wrote, "These latest allegations suggest the Secret Service is not consistently providing Donald Trump with presidential-level protection and attempting to conceal this fact from the government’s own auditors."

"The whistleblower alleges that the Secret Service denied access to DHS auditors because the former president is not receiving the full level of protective assets for all of his events, and Secret Service leadership wants to obscure or simply conceal this fact," he continued. "The whistleblower alleges Secret Service leadership is permitting OIG auditors only at select events -- such as a recent rally in North Carolina -- where former President Trump receives the full level of protective assets, to create the impression he is receiving this level of protection at all times, when in fact he is not."

Hawley noted that Rowe has claimed that Trump is receiving "the highest level of Secret Service protection" and "getting everything" he needs, but added, "This new whistleblower information troublingly contradicts your public statements."

The senator concluded his brief letter to the acting director with a couple of questions that need swift answers, including whether the Secret Service "blocked or in any way impeded the ability of DHS OIG officials to access any Trump campaign events," and if so, why, as well as whether Trump was truly receiving "everything" he and his campaign need to stay safe from harm.

"Secret Service may have interfered with your audits by blocking your office’s access"

In his separate letter to IG Cuffari, Sen. Hawley thanked him for quickly opening an investigation into the July 13 assassination attempt at former President Trump's rally in Pennsylvania, but wrote, "Unfortunately, it has come to my attention that the Secret Service may have interfered with your
audits by blocking your office’s access."

Per the whistleblower, "Although your staff was permitted access to an event in North Carolina that was staffed by the Secret Service’s 'best' Presidential Protect Division Agents, they were denied access to other events," the senator continued. "The Secret Service whistleblower alleges that the denial was in order to hide the fact that the former president is not receiving a consistent level of protective assets for all of his engagements."

Hawley pointed out how the whistleblower's allegations contradict Acting Director Rowe's public remarks and added, "As you continue to audit the agency’s programs and activities, you should be aware of these allegations, which indicate that the Secret Service is not, in fact, cooperating with your auditors and is instead painting a false picture."

Whistleblowers have revealed "highly damaging" information about Secret Service failures

These new allegations of Secret Service obstruction of the inspector general's probe come less than a month after Sen. Hawley issued a report outlining what had already been learned from multiple Secret Service whistleblowers, which he deemed to be "highly damaging to the credibility" of the Secret Service and DHS.

Those allegations "reveal a compounding pattern of negligence, sloppiness, and gross incompetence that goes back years, all of which culminated in an assassination attempt that came inches from succeeding."

The senator further asserted that the Secret Service, DHS, and the FBI have all "tried to evade real accountability" and that their leadership has "slow-walked congressional investigations, misled the American people, and shirked responsibility," including pressuring agents to not comply with congressional requests when, without a doubt, "The American people deserve answers."
