Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), 77, had some bad luck this weekend, fracturing his femur in a nasty fall during a parade back home.

According to the Washington Examiner, Blumenthal was taking part in a UConn Huskies victory parade in Hartford, Connecticut, over the weekend when the injury occurred.

His home state NCAA basketball team were crowned the champions of the March Madness national tournament on Monday.

The elderly senator will undergo "routine" surgery to fix the broken leg.

What happened?

In what appears to be a case of pure bad luck, one of the other persons in the procession, who was walking behind the senator, tripped and ended up falling on top of him.

His office released a statement on the senator's situation, and his outlook following the surgical procedure to fix the broken femur.

"Senator Blumenthal suffered a fracture when another parade goer tripped and fell onto the Senator from behind," a spokesperson said. "He will have routine surgery on Sunday and anticipates a full, strong recovery."

Blumenthal released a statement on Twitter, and seemed to be in good spirits.

What can I say, I love a parade! Thanks to Chris & everyone for the well wishes. I did indeed fracture my femur after a fellow parade goer tripped & fell on me during the parade today. Routine surgery tomorrow just to make sure everything heals properly. I expect a full recovery!" the senator tweeted.

Good timing

If there's a silver lining for his party, it's that Congress is still on Easter recess, giving him a little time to recover before returning back to work on April 17.

While that's only about a week, he's not expected to miss any votes as a result of the unfortunate injury.

The senator was widely praised by his supporters, including his son, on social media for finishing the parade with the injury.
