Sen. J.D. Vance, VP Kamala Harris have 'brief and respectful' phone call: Report

Less than 48 hours after former President Donald Trump's life was almost ended by a deranged gunman at a Pennsylvania rally, Trump shocked the Republican Party by announcing his 2024 running mate.

Ohio Republican Sen. J.D. Vance received the call to be Trump's vice president and was formally nominated at the Republican National Convention earlier this week.

According to Fox News, Vice President Kamala Harris and Vance reportedly had a civil discussion about an upcoming vice presidential debate, which is another highly anticipated event given Vance's strength at debating.

A source familiar with the phone call between the two said they had a "brief and respectful" conversation about an upcoming debate.

What's going on?

The call happened in the wake of Harris' initial call to Vance, which was reportedly sent to his voicemail, raising concerns that there was already high tension between the two camps.

Further details about the phone call between the two were not available, according to the source. Debate specifics have not yet been announced, but are expected in the coming weeks.

Fox News noted:

Harris previously had committed to a debate hosted by CBS News against Trump's running mate – who at that point had not been named – for either July 23 or Aug. 13. It is unclear when Vance and Harris will debate.

Given Vance's intellect and debate prowess, many believe he will likely dismantle Harris in a head-to-head debate.

Also, given the growing possibility that Harris could be at the top of the Democratic presidential ticket if President Joe Biden steps down, a debate with Vance will be critically important to show that she can hold her own on the important issues.

Trump praises Vance

While it wasn't a huge surprise to most that Trump selected Vance as his VP, the news rocked the headlines. Trump praised his pick in several statements on Truth Social.

"After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio," Trump wrote.

Vance has an impressive background in law and is considered highly intelligent, not to mention his views align closely with Trump's on virtually every issue.

Only time will tell just how bad Harris is destroyed by Vance in a debate, as she will clearly be out of her league against him.
