Sen. Rand Paul announces opposition to Trump's Labor secretary pick
President Donald Trump hasn't had much trouble rounding up proper Republican support for his list of nominees to fill his administration.
However, according to Fox News, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), typically a backer of the president and his nominees, revealed that he refuses to support Labor secretary nominee, former Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer.
Notably, Paul believes she'll lose quite a bit of Republican support, possibly up to 15 Republicans, while gaining potentially full support from Senate Democrats.
Chavez-DeRemer served as a Republican lawmaker representing the state of Oregon. She lost her reelection bid in the 2024 election.
What did he say?
Sen. Paul is a no-go on confirming the former Republican lawmaker due to her stance on the PRO Act, claiming that the law would "pre-empt state law" regarding "right to work."
He elaborated on his opposition to her confirmation in an X post, calling out her record on labor, which directly opposes his stances.
"I’m the national spokesman and lead author of the right-to-work bill,” Paul wrote, linking to the NBC News report in the post. “Her support for the PRO Act, which would not only oppose national right to work but would pre-empt state law on right to work — I think it’s not a good thing."

In a statement to NBC News, Paul wrote, "And it’d be sort of hard for me, since it’s a big issue for me, to support her. So I won’t support her."
The former GOP rep clearly had Trump's full endorsement, as he wrote when he announced her selection last year, "Lori has worked tirelessly with both Business and Labor to build America's workforce, and support the hardworking men and women of America."
Social media reaction
Social media users weighed in on Paul's stance on opposing her, with many agreeing.
"Oh no she’s not a good pick at all," one X user wrote.
Another X user wrote, "This is the worst pick for Trump's cabinet! Wanna bet that all Republicans will slavishly vote for this union-lover?!"
Only time will tell if Paul's opposition matters or not when it comes time for a confirmation vote.
