Senate recess put on hold as Republicans look to push Trump nominees through

It appears that the Senate might be putting its recess on hold in order to push through the nominations of President Donald Trump.

This comes, according to Fox News, after President Trump had asked Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) to call off the recess.

The Democrats are currently fighting the effort.

Background

Currently, in the U.S. Senate, there is a backlog of Trump nominees. The backlog, according to the New York Poststands at about 161 nominations. Thus far, the Senate has only confirmed about 115 individuals.

Both Trump and some Senate Republicans are not happy about the situation and have thus called for Thune to essentially call off the upper chamber's August recess.

Trump, on social media, recently wrote:

The Senate must stay in Session, taking no recess, until the entire Executive Calendar is CLEAR!!! We have to save our Country from the Lunatic Left. Republicans, for the health and safety of the USA, DO YOUR JOB, and confirm All Nominees. They should NOT BE FORCED TO WAIT. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Thune has told reporters that "everything is on the table," including the possibility that, instead of going for a recess, senators stay and push through Trump nominees.

The effort, though, is being vigorously opposed by Senate Democrats.

Negotiations are underway

Fox reports that senators are currently trying to reach a deal with regard to the situation.

Per the outlet:

Senate Republicans are still trying to hash out a deal with their Democratic counterparts to push through a package of President Donald Trump’s nominees as their scheduled departure from Washington has come and gone. Republicans are under pressure from the White House, and their own members, to find a path forward, but Senate Democrats have largely dug their heels into the dirt in opposition in a bid to slow down the confirmation process. Lawmakers are still in town hammering toward a deal, while growing frustrations and weariness simmer in the upper chamber.

By now, the senators should have begun their recess, but it appears that, at the very least, the recess has been delayed.

It is not exactly clear what these negotiations look like. One Republican senator claimed that the Democrats are essentially refusing to negotiate. Fox, however, reports that Thune and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) have been in talks.

We'll have to see how this one plays out.
