Senate Republicans boast of confirming Commerce secretary 'at record speed'
President Donald Trump has managed to quickly fill his cabinet, including with figures like Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard and Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Trump wracked up another victory on Tuesday when the Senate confirmed Department of Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick "at record speed."
Republican Senate leadership takes credit for confirmation
According to the Daily Caller, Lutnick's confirmation was celebrated by Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso.
"Under Leader [John] Thune and Whip [John] Barrasso, the Senate is moving at record speed to get the President’s Cabinet in place," Barrasso's communications director said in a statement.
Thune also spoke up on the Senate floor following the nominee's confirmation, declaring, "I'm pleased that Mr. Lutnick will be bringing a 'get it done' approach to the Department of Commerce."
"I am confident that he will work every day to help American commerce thrive so that the American people can thrive," he added.
Lutnick promises to make "our government more responsive"
The Daily Caller noted that for his part, Lutnick pledged to strengthen the nation's economy by improving its business climate.
"I saw the strength of the American spirit during President Trump’s campaign, and it fueled my desire to serve our nation," Lutnick told senators during his confirmation hearing.
"We need healthy businesses – small, medium, and large – to hire our great American workers to drive our economy," he insisted.
"I will dedicate myself to making our government more responsive, working to ensure Americans have the greatest opportunity for success," Lutnick went on to promise.
Sen. Markwayne Mullin says Kash Patel will be confirmed by Thursday
The Daily Caller noted that Lutnick is likely to soon be joined in the administration by Kash Patel, Trump's nominee for FBI director.
That prospect was touted in a social media post on Tuesday by Oklahoma Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin, who suggested that Patel will be confirmed by the end of the week.
An update on Senate procedure—
~5:30pm ET, the Senate will vote on a motion to proceed to executive session for @Kash_Patel. Then we'll file cloture to put him on the clock. Procedure aside — he’s set to be confirmed by Thursday.
