‘Smart move’: Trump praises Chuck Schumer's funding bill reversal as Democrats cry ‘betrayal’

On Friday President Donald Trump expressed his appreciation for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

The unexpected show of appreciation came following the announcement that the top Democrat had expressed his support for a Republican financing measure that was designed to prevent an approaching shutdown of the government, as Just The News reported.

In response to his choice, Chuck Schumer has been receiving criticism from the Democratic Party, which has resulted in a state of panic.

"Congratulations to Chuck Schumer for doing the right thing — Took 'guts' and courage! The big Tax Cuts, L.A. fire fix, Debt Ceiling Bill, and so much more, is coming. We should all work together on that very dangerous situation," Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.

More Appreciation

He continued, "A non-pass would be a Country destroyer, approval will lead us to new heights. Again, really good and smart move by Senator Schumer. This could lead to something big for the USA, a whole new direction and beginning!"

Meanwhile, the most powerful Democrat in the House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries, has vowed to oppose the budget plan and has declined to weigh in on the dispute in the Senate.

At a news conference, the leaders of the Democratic Party in the House of Representatives stated that they continue to be adamantly opposed to the bill that would fund the government, but they did not answer questions on how the Democrats in the Senate should vote on the bill.

“House Democrats remain strongly opposed to the partisan, Republican spending bill that will hurt families, hurt veterans, hurt seniors and hurt the American people. It is a false choice that Donald Trump, Elon Musk and House Republicans have been presenting between their reckless and partisan spending bill and a government shutdown,” said minority leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Backlash Over Schumer's Reversal

After promising to oppose the measure—which provides funding for the government until September—Schumer made a stunning about-face on Thursday.

Disagreements persist within the party, though, and his change of heart could sway other Democrats to back the bill. A government shutdown is scheduled to start at 12:01 am ET on Saturday, and Democrats run the risk of being held responsible for it if they opt to reject the package.

"There are no winners in a government shutdown," Schumer said on the Senate floor. "It's not really a decision, it's a Hobson’s choice: Either proceed with the bill before us or risk Donald Trump throwing America into the chaos of a shutdown. This in my view is no choice at all," he added.

In spite of Schumer's criticisms of the Republican-led measure, he expressed concern about the potential implications of a government shutdown. Without the bill's approval, he said, "carte blanche to destroy vital government services at a significantly faster rate than they can right now." This would give Trump and Elon Musk, who have been demanding cuts to big spending, more power.

Democrats Protest Schumer's Move

Some members of the Democratic Party expressed great unhappiness with Schumer's decision, which sent shockwaves through the party.

"I think there is a deep sense of outrage and betrayal, and this is not just progressive Democrats, this is across the board, the entire party," said New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at a Democratic retreat in Leesburg, Virginia, on Thursday night. "I think it is a huge slap in the face," she added.
