Soap opera fans were left heartbroken this week to learn that veteran actress Jacklyn Zeman passed away this week at the age of 70. 

The New York Post noted that Zeman was most widely known for playing the character Bobbie Spencer on ABC's "General Hospital" and the show's executive producer put out a statement on Wednesday regarding her death.

Zeman remembered as a "true professional"

"Just like her character, the legendary Bobbie Spencer, she was a bright light and true professional that brought so much positive energy with her to work," Frank Valentini said in a tweet.

"Jackie will be greatly missed, but her positive spirit will always live on with our cast and crew," Valentini continued in a subsequent tweet.

"We send our heartfelt sympathy to her loved ones, friends, and family, especially her daughters Cassidy and Lacey," he went on to add.

Family says actress' death was due to cancer

General Hospital" released a statement of its own, calling Zeman "a beloved member of the 'General Hospital' and ABC family since she originated the iconic role of Bobbie Spencer over 45 years ago."

"She leaves behind a lasting legacy for her Emmy-nominated portrayal of the bad girl turned heroine and will always be remembered for her kind heart and radiant spirit," the show stressed.

While details concerning Zeman's death have yet to be released, her family told ABC News that she passed away following a short bout with cancer.

Originally from New Jersey, the Post recalled how Zeman studied dance at New York University and worked as a Playboy Bunny prior to being cast on the ABC soap opera "One Life to Live" as Lana McClain.

Tributes to Zeman were quickly put on social media by fans, including one who asked, "How does one begin to sum up the force of nature that was multi-Emmy nominated actress Jacklyn Zeman?"

"It's simply not possible. Her light illuminated this world and daytime television for decades. A work and a life that will be remembered for generations to come," the fan insisted.
