Some Republicans call for Senate parliamentarian's firing

Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough raised eyebrows this week when she began stripping elements out of President Donald Trump's spending bill.

That development has infuriated Republicans, with some GOP lawmakers now calling for MacDonough to be fired.

Sen. Tommy Tuberville: "She's got to be gone"

According to Breitbart, one of MacDonough's critics is Alabama Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville, and he demanded her removal during a Thursday interview with Fox Business host Larry Kudlow.

"[I] said today she’s got to be gone," Tuberville declared. “We’ve got to fire her. And this is the reason why: She doesn’t put apples to apples. One thing she lets in. The next thing that kind of compares to it -- nah, it’s out."

"She struck out a provision that says illegals can’t get Medicare -- struck that out. Illegals can’t get student loans -- she struck that out. Taxpayers don’t have to pay for transitions for minors — she struck that out," he continued.

"Who in their right mind would strike that out of this bill?" the senator demanded. "So, yes -- you know, Trent Lott fired the parliamentarian in 2001 in a reconciliation process."

"It needs to be done again. We don’t need this partisanship. We need people to do their job. They’re not elected. They're hired as an employee. Do your job, and don't get politics involved," Tuberville went on to insist.

MacDonough originally hired by Harry Reid

Tuberville reiterated that message with a social media post in which he recalled the fact that MacDonough was promoted to her current position by former Sen. Majority Harry Reid.

"Did Harry Reid’s Senate Parliamentarian not get the memo? President Trump’s landslide victory was a MANDATE from 77 million Americans," Tuberville wrote.

"The One Big Beautiful Bill delivers on that mandate. The Parliamentarian is trying to UNDERMINE the President’s mandate and should be fired," he asserted.

Thune won't overrule

Tuberville is not alone in wanting to see MacDonough depart, as Republican Reps. Greg Steube and Dan Crenshaw do as well.

Yet as Politico pointed out, Senate Majority Leader John Thune has indicated that he has no intention of overruling MacDonough, much less firing her.

"No, that would not be a good option for getting a bill done," the South Dakota senator was quoted as telling the website on Thursday.
