Speaker Johnson working to bring Marjorie Taylor Greene onboard with GOP shutdown strategy
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is hard at work attempting to court Marjorie Taylor Greene after she split with the GOP's shutdown strategy.
Greene, a famously staunch loyalist to President Donald Trump, has been creating problems for the GOP as she is sticking to principles and representing MAGA voters by rejecting the political gamesmanship that GOP leadership is engaging in.
This has put her at odds with party leadership and even President Trump himself. Despite her loyalty to Trump, Greene has been very clear that she will not be a blind soldier and is fighting for MAGA, not Trump or House leadership.
Speaker Johnson has chosen an interesting strategy to bring Greene in line, as he claimed he offered her a chance to sit in on the House's healthcare committee in return for her cooperation on sunsetting Affordable Care Act subsidies.
Speaking to Fox News, Johnson explained, "I had a thoughtful conversation with my friend Marjorie Taylor Greene on the phone the other night… to inform her that there are many Republicans in Congress that have been working around the clock on this... Marjorie doesn’t serve on those committees, so I offered to have her come into the room and be a part of that discussion, if indeed she wants to."
America first
Greene is fast establishing herself as a politician who will prioritize her voters and the America First agenda over the political games that are so endemic to the swamp that is Washington, D.C.
Greene has demanded that Senate Republicans grow a spine and nuke the filibuster in order to crush Democrat opposition to reopening the government as the American people begin to feel the effects of the shutdown.
The biggest breakpoint for Greene from the GOP is her demands that the GOP and the Democrat Party come together to permanently extend enhanced Obamacare subsidies that are set to expire by the end of the year.
In a post on X, Greene stated, "I’m going to go against everyone on this issue because when the tax credits expire this year my own adult children’s insurance premiums for 2026 are going to DOUBLE, along with all the wonderful families and hard-working people in my district."
No matter one's feelings on Obamacare, fears about doubling insurance premiums must be addressed, and Speaker Johnson's outright dismissive response is frankly insulting.
GOP arrogance
Instead of addressing Greene's concerns, Johnson dismissively claimed that because Greene isn't sitting on the relevant committees, she doesn't know what she's talking about. He further claimed she just wasn't read in on Republicans' healthcare plans.
If it's true that Greene wasn't read in, that raises the question of why House GOP leadership isn't including certain members in planning. This entire debacle reeks of arrogance from GOP leadership, while Greene is actually cutting through the mess.
While Democrats are definitely an obstacle to reopening the government, there are elements in the GOP that don't care about serving the American people either.
