Special counsel who indicted Trump caught in lie

Jack Smith -- the Department of Justice special prosecutor who has indicted President Donald Trump -- appears to have just been caught in a rather blatant lie.

The lie came during the remarks that Smith gave on Friday afternoon, and the remarks came after the indictment that Smith filed against Trump was unsealed.

The indictment charges Trump with 37 crimes regarding his handling of confidential materials. The charges include such things as false statements, willful retention of national defense information, and conspiracy to obstruct justice.

Trump is facing as many as 400 years behind bars were he to be found guilty of the 37 charges and given the maximum penalties.

Smith's remarks

After the indictment was unsealed, Smith made some brief remarks about it.

Here's part of what Smith had to say:

The men and women of the United States intelligence community and our armed forces dedicate their lives to protecting our nation and its people. Our laws that protect national defense information are critical to the safety and security of the United States, and they must be enforced. Violations of those laws put our country at risk.

There is nothing too controversial about this.

But, take a look at what Smith said next: "Adherence to the rule of law is a bedrock principle of the Department of Justice, and our nation’s commitment to the rule of law sets an example for the world."

He added, "We have one set of laws in this country and they apply to everyone."

Hmmm . . . are you sure about that?

If Smith wanted the American people to take his statement seriously, he needed to explain at least two things.

First, Smith needed to explain why it is that Trump is being charged but Hillary Clinton was not. Clinton, the reader will likely remember, infamously destroyed some 30,000 emails containing confidential information that she illegally was keeping on a private server. Yet, Clinton was let off the hook.

Second, Smith needed to explain why it is that Trump is being charged but President Joe Biden is not. Biden, after all, had classified documents in his possession from his time as a U.S. Senator. That is not to mention the alleged Biden family corruption that the DOJ also seems to be ignoring.

Lastly, it would have been wise for Smith to explain how this situation isn't what it looks like, namely, President Joe Biden persecuting his top Republican rival.

Smith did not explain any of this. His total statement was less than three minutes in length, and, afterward, he quickly exited the room, refusing to take questions from reporters. The situation, like the Biden administration in general, is a farce.
