Special prosecutor appointed to dive into Jay Jones' reckless driving charges
Jay Jones, the Virginia Democratic candidate for attorney general who has come under fire over the past few weeks for a variety of reasons, just took another major hit this week.
According to JustTheNews, the New Kent County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, on Wednesday, appointed a special prosecutor to determine how, exactly, Jones fulfilled his 1,000 hours of required community service after a reckless driving conviction in 2022.
Jones reportedly pulled off some sneaky stuff in telling the court that he had completed his service hours.
According to the report, Jones used his own Political Action Committee to sign off on the 1000 required community service hours, but failed to tell the judge that he completed the hours as part of a PAC, let alone his own PAC.
What's going on?
Jones, who, for someone running for Attorney General, seems like one of the most dishonest and integrity-lacking candidates possible, will have to answer some embarrassing questions about the situation.
JustTheNews noted:
The issue involves the fact that Jones’ community service documentation failed to make clear that "Meet Our Moment" was a political action committee (PAC), which was in fact Jones’ own PAC.
The county attorney's office announced that Special Prosecutor Nathan Green will oversee the investigation into Jones' actions.
Political scientist Larry Sabato suggested that Jones getting hit with his "October surprise" was simply his own fault.
“He knew that he had that reckless driving conviction on his record, 116 miles an hour on an interstate,” Sabato said.
He added, “He knew about all the texts that he had sent, and obviously, he sent them to a Republican. Whatever the background was is almost irrelevant at this point, but he knew all those things were there, and he decided to run anyway. It's called egotism.”
Reactions pour in
Users across social media, including Jones' election rival, slammed him over the situation.
Jay Jones was caught recklessly driving 116 miles per hour on I-64.
Then, he tried to claim campaign work for his own PAC counted as community service to avoid jail.
