Supreme Court hands Trump win on illegal immigration policy

The justices of the U.S. Supreme Court just handed President Donald Trump a big win.

Just the News reports that the justices gave the green light to one of the president's immigration policies.

Trump is celebrating the win:

The details

This has to do with President Trump's attempt to revoke the temporary legal status that was granted by former President Joe Biden to around 500,000 illegal immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.

NBC News reports:

The Supreme Court on Friday allowed the Trump administration to revoke the temporary legal status of more than 500,000 immigrants that was granted by the Biden administration, making them subject to deportation.

This comes after Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem filed with the Supreme Court an emergency application asking the justices for permission to revoke the temporary legal status.

Just the News explains:

The ruling was the result of the Trump administration contesting a decision by U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani in Massachusetts, who ruled the administration could not remove each person’s status without an individualized determination.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) argued before the Supreme Court that Talwani did not have the authority to issue the decision, that, rather, that authority belonged to the holder of Noem's position.

A 7-2 decision

It appears that the overwhelming majority of the Supreme Court justices agree with the Trump decision, as they issued a 7-2 decision in the administration's favor.

It will be unsurprising to learn that the two justices who dissented were Justices Ketanji Brown Jackson and Sonia Sotomayor, two of the court's most liberal justices.

Just the News reports:

Justices Ketanji Brown Jackson and Sonia Sotomayor dissented. Jackson wrote in her dissent that the court had failed to take into account "the devastating consequences of allowing the government to precipitously upend the lives and livelihoods of nearly half a million noncitizens while their legal claims are pending."

The Supreme Court's majority, for its part, did not explain why it came out in favor of the Trump administration on this one. The Trump administration said, "We are confident in the legality of our actions to protect the American people and look forward to further action from the Supreme Court to vindicate us."

Now, it appears that the Trump administration will, once again, look to deport a large number of these illegal immigrants. Some of those who have their temporary legal status revoked may pursue other avenues of gaining access to the United States, such as through an asylum claim.
