Teamsters, Republicans furious at Biden-Harris administration over dockworkers strike
Thousands of union dockworkers went on strike to begin the month of October, and the situation could quickly go from bad to worse for working-class Americans already struggling.
According to the Daily Mail, it's also going to get worse for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, who are both taking the brunt of the blame for the situation.
Just after midnight to begin the month, the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) announced that ports up and down the East Coast and all the way to Texas had been shuttered as its 45,000 union workers took to the picket lines.
The strike could cost Americans a staggering $5 billion per day, if not more, and Teamsters are not happy about the situation, telling the Biden-Harris administration to stay out of it.
What's going on?
Given the U.S. dependency on foreign imports, and the mountain of products unloaded and trucked out of dozens of ports daily, it's no wonder truck drivers and affiliated support workers are furious at what's happening.
Sean O'Brien, a leader of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters had a blunt and direct message for the Biden-Harris administration, saying, "stay the f*** out of this fight."
"The U.S. government should stay the f*** out of this fight and allow union workers to withhold their labor for the wages and benefits they have earned," O'Brien said.
He added, "Corporations for too long have been able to rely on political puppets to help them strip working people of their inherent leverage."
The outlet noted:
The Teamsters "stand in full solidarity" with ILA in its "fight for a fair and just contract with the ocean carriers represented by USMX."
His union, though not directly involved in the dockworkers actions, similarly conducts organized actions with its some 1.3 million members as negotiating tools.
However, it's not just union leaders and members furious about what's happening. Republicans are also blaming Biden and Harris for letting it get to this point.
Speaker Johnson's reaction
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) weighed in on the dockworkers strike, taking aim at the White House.
"This administration's failure to encourage a resolution between the International Longshoremen's Association Union and the U.S. Maritime Alliance will only exacerbate the economic pain wrought by four years of skyrocketing inflation, decreasing wages and fewer jobs," Speaker Johnson said.
He added, "Just one day of paused operations will have devastating consequences on the economy, and hardworking American families will feel the impact of higher prices, empty shelves, and lost economic output."
The Republican speaker concluded by saying that such a situation requires strong leadership that is non-existent in Biden's White House.
