A family was left devastated this past weekend after a freak cruise ship accident claimed the life of a teenager.

According to Orlando's Fox 35, the tragedy occurred on Saturday aboard Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas cruise ship, which is based out of Port Canaveral, Florida and makes regular trips to the Bahamas and Western Caribbean.

Cruise line "saddened to learn of the passing of a guest"

The news station quoted a statement put out by Royal Caribbean which read, "We are saddened to learn of the passing of a guest and our hearts go out to the family. Out of respect for them, we won’t provide any further comment."

While the cruise ship line is providing few details, TMZ reported that the deceased was a 16-year-old boy who fell from a balcony.

The website indicated that an announcement was made urging cruise ship passengers to donate blood for the teen at a medical tent.

TMZ also cited an unnamed source said to have knowledge of the matter who explained that the boy later passed away at a hospital rather than onboard the ship.

What's more, it published photos showing caution tape strung over the balcony as well as a tent that was erected on the deck below.

This is not the only major accident to occur on a Royal Caribbean ship this year, as in June a 43-year-old woman fell overboard.

According to NBC News, she plummeted from the Mariner of the Seas' 10th deck as the vessel was traveling near the Dominican Republic.

"The ship and crew immediately reported the incident to local authorities and began searching for the guest," Royal Caribbean said in a statement.

"Thankfully, the guest was successfully recovered and was brought on board. Our Care team is now offering assistance and support to them and their traveling party," it continued.

Royal Caribbean added that the ship continued on its trip as planned and that the woman's name would not be revealed.
