A Temple University student was arrested in Philadelphia Saturday night for allegedly impersonating an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent and conducting a fake ICE raid.

Aidan Steigelmann, 22, faces charges of impersonating a public servant for allegedly attempting to enter a dorm and entering an Insomnia Cookies location on campus with another suspect wearing shirts that said "ICE" and "Police" while a third suspect filmed them.

Temple Police responded to the Johnson & Hardwick Residence Hall around 9:30 p.m. when a security guard reported two male students who said they were ICE agents.

The students were refused entry to the dorm, and it is not clear what they wanted to do if they had gained entry.

"Deeply troubling"

The three students left in a Jaguar SUV, and were seen at Insomnia Cookies 15 minutes later. Two of the students left in a light-colored SUV, and Steigelmann was found nearby and arrested.

Steigelmann was suspended from Temple pending an investigation into his actions.

"Any student found responsible for this conduct will be subject to disciplinary action under the Student Conduct Code, up to and including expulsion," university officials said in a statement.

"It is deeply troubling and disappointing to know behavior like this reportedly occurred on our campus," Temple police told Fox affiliate WXTF.

Dangerous and illegal

The other two suspects in the alleged fake ICE raid are still at large.

ICE did raid a Philadelphia car wash earlier in the week as part of its ramp-up in arrests and deportations after President Donald Trump took office.

Temple University Police have reportedly reassured students and staff there that no federal ICE agents have been on the campus.

An ICE spokesperson said in a statement about the incident:

The impersonation of any law enforcement officer is not only dangerous, but illegal, and imposters may be charged under federal law 18 USC 912. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and agents are highly trained and dedicated professionals who are sworn to uphold the law, protect the American people and support U.S. national security. Anyone who suspects they have encountered an imposter is encouraged to contact local law enforcement.

President Donald Trump has arrested more than 8,000 illegal immigrants with plans to deport them to their countries of origin.

Most of those arrested have committed crimes, most of them violent. Many are gang members who fled their countries of origin to escape arrest and detention.
