Texas Democrat ordered to end video conference call with Gavin Newsom
California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom is spearheading efforts to redraw GOP-held congressional districts in his state as retaliation for a similar move by Texas Republicans.
While Newsom recently discussed the plan on a video conference call, one Texas Democrat was told to hang up or face felony charges.
"Sorry, I have to leave. They said it's a felony for me to do this."
That's according to Fox News, which explained that the call also featured Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin and other high-ranking Democrats.
Fox News noted how at one point, Martin claimed that Texas' new electoral map "will prevent Black and Brown individuals from selecting the candidates of their choice because they’re cracking and packing these districts."
However, Texas Democratic state Rep. Nicole Collier abruptly announced that she needed to hang up, remarking, "Sorry, I have to leave. They said it's a felony for me to do this."
"Apparently I can't be on the floor or in the bathroom," the Democratic lawmaker could be heard saying to someone who was off camera.
"You told me I was only allowed to be here in the bathroom," Collier continued before adding, "No, hang on. Bye everybody. I’ve got to go."
Collier camped out on House floor rather than accept a police escort
Fox News noted that Collier was camping out on the House floor of the Texas Capitol building after refusing to accept an escort from officers with the Texas Department of Public Safety.
That escort was imposed by Republican members of the legislature after Democrats fled the state earlier this month as part of an unsuccessful attempt to prevent the new map from passing.
News of Collier's experience quickly brought outrage from fellow Democrats, including New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker.
"That is outrageous," Fox News quoted Booker as saying. "Let me tell you something, Rep. Collier in the bathroom has more dignity than Donald Trump in the Oval Office."
Cory Booker calls development "outrageous"
"What they’re trying to do right there is silence an American leader, silence a Black woman, and that is outrageous," the senator declared.

"What we just witnessed, them trying to shut her down and saying it's illegal for her to be in the bathroom and on this call, this is the lengths that they’re going to in Texas," he went on to assert.
