The Atlantic explains how the Supreme Court is helping Trump out

The left-wing outlet The Atlantic just admitted that former President Donald Trump is getting what he wants from the U.S. Supreme Court.

The outlet's Ronald Brownstein made the admission in a recent piece, titledTrump Is Getting What He Wants: The Supreme Court Seems To Be Endorsing His Views On Presidential Power.

To briefly provide some background, Trump is facing several prosecutions, and he has argued that some of the charges brought against him are barred by the doctrine of presidential immunity, which protects a U.S. president from legal action for official acts that he did while he was the president.

The matter has made it before the U.S. Supreme Court, and, just recently, the court heard oral arguments. The justices are expected to release their decision on the matter at some point in June.

Trump Is Getting What He Wants

Brownstein, in his piece, points out what many others have, namely, that the Supreme Court is playing a big role for Trump here.

He wrote:

At today’s hearing on Donald Trump’s claim of absolute immunity from criminal prosecution, the Republican-appointed Supreme Court majority appeared poised to give him what he most desires in the case: further delays that virtually preclude the chance that he will face a jury in his election-subversion case before the November election.

This is huge because it is clear that Special Counsel Jack Smith and others have been attempting to get a criminal conviction of Trump before the 2024 presidential election in order to help out President Joe Biden's reelection chances.

Brownstein also notes that "four of the justices appear predominantly focused on limiting the possibility that future presidents could face such charges for their actions in office, with Chief Justice John Roberts expressing more qualified sympathy with those arguments."

In other words, the Supreme Court is likely to at least partially grant Trump's immunity claims.

Looking forward

The importance of this Supreme Court case cannot be overstated. It is likely to have a huge impact on American politics going forward.

Trump and his allies have made it clear that if the U.S. president does not have immunity and if Trump becomes president, then, as soon as Biden leaves office, they will use the law against him.

Trump advisor Stephen Miller recently said:

If they say there’s no immunity for official acts, the moment Joe Biden leaves office, every single red city and red state DA in the country can charge him for financial crimes related to illegal student loan bailouts, can charge him for war crimes related to deaths of service members overseas, can charge him for human trafficking, human smuggling and by the way, more election interference than you can even count.

Trump, himself, seemed to agree, saying, "There must be Presidential Immunity!"

As stated earlier, it does appear as though the Supreme Court is leaning toward allowing some type of immunity. The big question, however, is how far this immunity will extend.
