Fans of country music were left devastated this week after the family of longtime singer Toby Keith announced that he had succumbed to cancer.

According to the Daily Mail, Keith's final public words came in the form of a post he made on Instagram.

"And that’s a wrap on the weekend, y'all. Back to it"

The newspaper pointed to a video taken at an event which was put up a day before the 62-year-old's death. Keith captioned the clip with, "And that’s a wrap on the weekend, y'all. Back to it."

That performance took place shortly after an earlier concert at Las Vegas' Park MGM Hotel that saw the singer bring his mother on stage.

"I want to introduce you to somebody, this is my mom - she's the one that taught me how to sing," Keith was quoted as telling fans before the two embraced.

The Daily Mail noted that in addition to his mother, Keith is survived by his wife, Tricia Lucas, along with their three children.

Blake Shelton remembers Keith as "an inspiration"

They include daughter Krystal Ladawn Covel Sandubrae, a singer who is known professionally as Krystal Keith. The two performed together in 2004 at the Country Music Association (CMA) awards ceremony.

News of Keith's passing was quickly met with tributes to him on social media, including from fellow country music artists.

They included singer Blake Shelton, who wrote, "Even though I knew about your battle these last few months I still never imagined this day."

"Anyone who knew you knows what I mean. You were the toughest man I ever met. Thank you brother for being a friend, a hero and an inspiration. There will never be another Toby Keith," Blake stressed.

Keith called "a huge presence in our business"

Jason Aldean spoke up as well, saying, "Just waking up to the news of Toby Keith’s passing. Today is a sad day for Country music and its fans."

Aldean recalled how Keith "was a huge presence in our business" as well as "someone we all looked up to and respected," adding, "You and your music will be forever remembered big man."

Meanwhile, Carrie Underwood declared, "We’re gonna miss you, Toby, but my heart has no doubt that you are standing in the presence of our King right now!!! See you again someday, friend."
