One of the witnesses in the ongoing "hush money" trial of former President Donald Trump revealed how the former president managed to turn around a bad situation and to ultimately defeat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.

The witness, according to The Hill, is Hope Hicks, the former Trump campaign and White House communications director.

Background

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D) has essentially forced Hicks to testify on his behalf, and this has proven to be a huge miscalculation for Bragg, as Hicks has virtually sunk Bragg's case.

She did so by explaining to the court that, contrary to what Bragg has claimed, Trump did not pay a hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels to help out his 2016 election campaign but, rather, he paid it to her to protect his wife, former First Lady Melania Trump.

This is a big deal as it completely undermines Bragg's case.

But, Hicks did a lot more than just this.

The Clinton story

Bragg and his prosecutors have been trying to sneak the infamous Access Hollywood tape into the case. This is the one that was leaked just before the 2016 presidential election, the one in which Trump could be heard talking grabbing women's genitals.

The judge has refused to allow the tape into the courtroom, but the prosecution has still been referring to it every chance that they get, hoping to prejudice the jury against Trump.

Hicks, too, was asked about the tape, and she recalled what happened when it was first leaked.

The Hill reports, "A Washington Post reporter had notified the [Trump] campaign that, in two hours, the paper planned to publish what became known as the 'Access Hollywood' tape."

Hicks then explained how she and other aides broke it to Trump - who, at the time, was preparing for a debate with Clinton - and how they ultimately handled the situation.

How Trump turned the tables on Clinton

This leak of the tape, no doubt, was supposed to be a huge win for Clinton and the Democrats, just ahead of the 2016 presidential election. But, Hicks, during her testimony, revealed how Trump managed to turn the situation around in his favor.

The Hill reports:

After a weekend filled with Republicans scrambling to figure out what to do, including what would happen if Trump ended his bid that late into the election cycle, the former reality television host managed to reengineer media attention toward his efforts to seat sexual abuse accusers of Clinton’s husband, former President Clinton, in a VIP box at the very debate he was prepping for at the time the “Access Hollywood” tape leaked.

This had to have been a devastating blow for Clinton, realizing that she still couldn't beat Trump even with the help of this leaked tape. It, no doubt, says a lot about what Americans think about her - and it's not good.
