Trump admin ends 'temporary' status of Haitian migrants

The administration of President Donald Trump just terminated the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) of thousands of Haitian migrants who are currently living in the United States.

Breitbart News reports that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the move on Friday.

Fox News reports that there are about 520,000 Haitian migrants currently residing in the United States under TPS.

In other words, this is a big move by Trump and his administration.

The details:

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem made the announcement on Friday that TPS for Haitian migrants will be coming to an end.

"This decision restores integrity in our immigration system and ensures that Temporary Protective Status is actually temporary," Noem said.

She added:

The environmental situation in Haiti has improved enough that it is safe for Haitian citizens to return home. We encourage these individuals to take advantage of the Department’s resources in returning to Haiti, which can be arranged through the CBP Home app. Haitian nationals may pursue lawful status through other immigration benefit requests, if eligible.

Noem explained that the Trump administration will formally end the TPS for Haitian migrants living in the United States on Aug. 3. Then, this formal order will go into effect on Sept. 2.

Clearly, the Trump administration is hoping that many of these more than 500,000 Haitian migrants will leave on their own. Presumably, if they do not, then they will be deported.

Background

Fox News explains how TPS was created by Congress back in 1990.

Per the outlet:

TPS was created by Congress in the Immigration Act of 1990 with the intention of allowing residents of countries who faced natural disasters, war, or other unsafe, extraordinary conditions to designate refuge in the U.S. The program can be extended in increments of 18-month periods.

Breitbart explains how "Since the Clinton administration, TPS has been transformed into a de facto amnesty program as nearly every president has routinely extended and designated new countries for TPS status."

"Former President Joe Biden expanded TPS to the highest levels in the program’s history — ensuring that over a million migrants became eligible for the quasi-amnesty," the outlet adds.

Trump, during his 2024 presidential campaign, vowed to address this issue head-on, and this is exactly what he has been doing. Fox reports:

The Trump administration has made a hard push to roll back TPS designations to fulfill a campaign promise to strengthen the border and deport many of the illegal migrants who crossed the border during the Biden administration.
