Trump administration ends translation contract after making English official language
At the beginning of this month, President Donald Trump signed an executive order which designated English as America's official language.
Consistent with that change, the Trump administration recently moved to end a translation services contract.
Translation contract costed over half a million dollars per year
According to Breitbart, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will no longer pay Legal Interpreting Services, Inc. to assist those calling in to use the E-Verify program or the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE).
E-Verify allows employers to confirm that prospective workers are eligible for employment while SAVE is used to determine if an alien can receive benefits.
Breitbart pointed out that Legal Interpreting Services, Inc.'s contract, which was first awarded in 2022, was worth some $587,000.
While the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has another contract with Legal Interpreting Services, Inc. which is valued at $3.6 million, it is not yet known if that figure will be reduced or eliminated.
Migrant advocate argues that change will make it harder to correct errors
Adriel Orozco is a representative of the migrant advocacy group American Immigration Council representative, and he told the website Government Executive that cancelation of translation services will lead to negative impacts.
Specifically, he complained that both the E-Verify program as well as SAVE are often plagued with faulty information.
"Lack of interpretation services will only make it harder for many workers and families whose dominant language is not English from being able to correct immigration status errors in these databases," Government Executive quoted Orozco as saying.
"This risks people being wrongly denied benefits or being unfairly terminated from their jobs," the immigration activist went on to insist.
Trump says "a designated language is at the core of a unified and cohesive society"
In his executive order signed on March 1, Trump highlighted how America's "historic governing documents, including the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, have all been written in English."

"It is therefore long past time that English is declared as the official language of the United States," the president declared.
"A nationally designated language is at the core of a unified and cohesive society, and the United States is strengthened by a citizenry that can freely exchange ideas in one shared language," Trump added.
