The Trump administration has fulfilled a campaign promise to release the long-classified files related to the assassination of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

According to an Office of the Director of National Intelligence press release, the Trump administration is set to release an astounding 230,000 pages of documents related to MLK's assassination at the hands of James Earl Ray, an escaped convict.

Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard confirmed that the release of the files comes as the result of President Donald Trump’s executive order seeking to declassify information on multiple high-profile assassinations.

Executive Order 14176 requires that documents related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, all be released to the public.

Releasing everything

This order is the fulfillment of a campaign promise Trump made to champion transparency and bring answers to questions that have gone unanswered for decades.

The ODNI isn't the only federal agency participating in the release of these thousands of documents on MLK's assassination.

Other agencies like the Department of Justice (DOJ), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and the National Archives are all working with the ODNI to comply with Trump's executive order.

Gabbard released a statement alongside the file release stating, "The American people have waited nearly sixty years to see the full scope of the federal government’s investigation into Dr. King’s assassination."

She continued by saying, "Under President Trump’s leadership, we are ensuring that no stone is left unturned in our mission to deliver complete transparency on this pivotal and tragic event in our nation’s history. I extend my deepest appreciation to the King family for their support."

Prioritizing transparency

The FBI's files are of most interest to many Americans, as it was well known that the FBI was working to undermine the civil rights movement by targeting leaders like MLK.

It's also suspected that James Earl Ray's decision to recant his confession to murdering MLK after being sentenced to 99 years in prison may be indicative of a greater conspiracy to kill one of the civil rights movement's most important leaders.

Trump is deconstructing the power of Washington D.C.'s 'Deep State' by declassifying information on important events in American history that may have been manipulated in order to push false narratives.

Dr. Alveda King, niece of MLK, praised Trump and Gabbard for fulfilling the promise to release the documents related to her uncle’s assassination during Trump's campaign.

King's statement read, "My uncle lived boldly in pursuit of truth and justice, and his enduring legacy of faith continues to inspire Americans to this day. While we continue to mourn his death, the declassification and release of these documents are a historic step towards the truth that the American people deserve."
