Trump admits East Wing being demolished to add ballroom

President Donald Trump admitted Wednesday that the East Wing of the White House is being demolished to add a ballroom, telling reporters that the area, which housed the offices of the first lady, "was not particularly nice."

Prior to Monday, when images of the demolition began to hit the media, Trump had said that the Whit House itself would "not be touched" and that the ballroom would be adjacent to the East Wing, the Daily Mail reported.

"It was never thought of as being much," he told reporters on Wednesday.

"It will be demolished," he reportedly told donors of the new structure. "Everything out there is coming down and it will be replaced by the most beautiful ballroom."

The outcry

The demolition will be completed by this weekend, according to the New York Times.

Former East Wing staffers and, of course, everyone who already hated Trump anyway, claim to be devastated over the loss of part of a "historic" building.

Even some conservatives, like the Washington Examiner's Byron York, have made comments about it.

"The president needs to tell the public now what he is doing with the East Wing of the White House. And then tell the public why he didn't tell them before he started doing it," York posted to X Tuesday night.

Wishful thinking

Democrats even think Trump's actions will turn elections their way.

'I genuinely think the images of them destroying the East Wing of the White House could be a game changer in the elections,' former Biden White House official Neera Tanden posted to X on Wednesday.

This is likely wishful thinking on their part, because when Trump unveils the glittering new ballroom, most people will forget all about the demo happening now.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked point blank in July whether the East Wing would be demolished.

All she would say is that "necessary construction will take place" and the East Wing will be "modernized."

Now we know what that meant, and it's obvious by the outcry why the administration wasn't more up front about everything from the get-go.
