Trump and Massie clash over war capability
President Donald Trump is again at odds with some of the more libertarian in the Republican party as he struggles to balance being the commander in chief of the military, and a politician.
Following Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky's co-introduction of a proposal to limit his war powers, Trump unleashed his wrath on the libertarian and promised to support a primary challenger.
During an angry Truth Social tirade, Trump slammed Massie (R-KY) as a "pathetic loser"—a sentiment with which he has long been at odds.
Trump's comments
“Massie is weak, ineffective, and votes ‘NO’ on virtually everything put before him (Rand Paul, Jr.), no matter how good something may be,” Trump fumed on Truth Social Sunday.
“Massie should drop his fake act and start putting America First, but he doesn’t know how to get there — he doesn’t have a clue!” he added. “MAGA should drop this pathetic LOSER, Tom Massie, like the plague!”
“The good news is that we will have a wonderful American Patriot running against him in the Republican Primary, and I’ll be out in Kentucky campaigning really hard.”
More conflict
Despite its potential to be the president's biggest legislative accomplishment of the year and perhaps his second term, Massie voted against the House version of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act last month.
Both parties have engaged in heated debates on multiple occasions.
It was in 2020 when Massie drew Trump's fury by opposing a $2 trillion emergency COVID-19 rescue plan meant to stave off a severe recession.
A war powers resolution to limit Trump's capacity to attack Iran was introduced last week by Massie and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA).
Following the strikes carried out by Trump against Iran's nuclear sites in Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow, that measure appears to have gained serious momentum in Congress. The move was immediately labeled as unconstitutional by Massie.
Promotion of the measure
On Sunday's episode of CBS's "Face the Nation," Massie and Khanna promoted the measure during an interview.
“I represent part of the coalition that elected President Trump. We were tired of endless wars in the Middle East, and tired of wars in Eastern Europe,” Massie said on the program.
“They should have called us all back,” he went on. “And, frankly, we should have debated this war powers resolution that Ro Khanna and I offered, instead of staying on vacation and doing fundraisers, and saying, ‘Oh, well, the president’s got this under control, we’re going to cede our constitutional authority.'”
