Trump angered by breach of Israel-Iran ceasefire hours after its announcement
The United States military notched a massive achievement over the weekend with its successful strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities, prompting effusive praise and expressions of gratitude from President Donald Trump.
In the aftermath of the strikes, the president announced that a ceasefire had been reached between Israel and Iran, but when that was followed by additional missile strikes and vows of retaliation, Trump made his displeasure crystal clear, as Breitbart reports.
Ceasefire announced
It was on Monday evening that Trump took to his Truth Social platform to announce that a ceasefire agreement had been reached between Iran and Israel, countries that had been involved in escalating conflict since earlier in the month.
The president began, “CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximate3ly 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point, the War will be considered, ENDED!”
He went on, “Officially, Iran will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 12th Hour, Israel will start the CEASEFIRE, and, upon the 24th Hour, an Official END to THE 12 DAY WAR will be saluted by the World.”
Trump continued, “During each CEASEFIRE, the other side will remain PEACEFUL and RESPECTFUL. On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate, both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, “THE 12 DAY WAR.”
The president further observed, “This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn't, and never will,” and in a subsequent phone interview, he stated, “I think the ceasefire is unlimited. It's going to go forever” and when asked whether the conflict had truly come to an end, he added, “Yes. I don't believe they will ever be shooting at each other again.”
Missiles launched
Despite Trump's expressions of great optimism, Iran reportedly initiated a missile attack aimed at Israel early on Tuesday morning, not long after the ceasefire was to have taken effect, as Breitbart noted separately.
Tehran denied the claims made by Israel, though the Associated Press reported that sirens had been heard in northern Israel and explosions were also observed, prompting the Israeli Defense Forces to declare, “In light of the severe violation of the ceasefire carried out by the Iranian regime, we will respond with force.”
Trump, for his part, was clearly angered by the developments, declaring that both parties to the ceasefire had violated its terms, noting that while Iran committed a breach, “Israel violated it too. I'm not happy with Israel.”
As evidence of the president's disgust, he unleashed an uncharacteristic use of profanity, telling reporters, “They don't know what the f**k they're doing.”
Warnings heeded?
Taking steps to secure compliance with the previously announced ceasefire, Trump again took to Truth Social Tuesday morning to say, “ISRAEL. DO NOT DROP THOSE BOMBS. IF YOU DO IT IS A MAJOR VIOLATION. BRING YOUR PILOTS HOME. NOW!”
While en route to the Hague to meet with NATO officials, Trump reportedly spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, demanding that no further attacks take place.
In a subsequent update to Truth Social, Trump stated, “ISRAEL is not going to attack Iran. All planes will turn around and head home, while doing a friendly 'Plane Wave' to Iran. Nobody will be hurt, the Ceasefire is in effect,” but whether this fragile scenario is able hold as the days progress, only time will tell.
