Trump announces he won't run in 2028

While many believe that President Donald Trump should have taken office in January of 2020, taking on a second consecutive term in office, his 2024 term is off to a big start, regardless.

When it comes to his future plans, some believe he could have a third term, as it would be his second consecutive term, but it appears Trump doesn't plan to pursue it, as Breitbart News reported.

Trump said on Sunday during an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he was not considering a run for a third term as president.

Host Kristen Welker said, “The Trump organization is selling hats that say Trump 2028. Are you seriously considering a third term, Mr. President, even though it’s prohibited by the Constitution, or is this about staying politically viable?”

The Trump take

Trump said, “I will say this: so many people want me to do it. I have never had requests so strong as that, but it’s something that, to the best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do."

"I don’t know if that’s constitutional, that they’re not allowing you to do or anything else, but there are many people willing to wear the 2028 hats, but this is not something I’m looking to do," he continued.

The president didn't address the big question: Is it a constitutional violation to have a third term? He just said he wants another Republican to win in 2028.

"I’m looking to have four great years and turn it over to somebody, ideally, a great Republican, a great Republican to carry it forward, but I think we’ll have four years, and I think four years is plenty of time to do something really spectacular,” he posited.

Follow-up for followers

Welker questioned the president further, saying, “The Constitution does prohibit it. Some of your allies are pretty serious about this, though, Mr. President. I’ve spoken to them. They say they are coming up with potential ways, obviously the biggest one would be a constitutional amendment.”

Trump responded, saying, “That’s because they like the job I’m doing, and that’s a compliment," offering a nod of thanks to his dedicated followers.

The president might not run in 2028, but that doesn't mean that there couldn't be a Trump on the ticket, maybe even a Donald Trump, as Trump's oldest son, Don Jr., as he's affectionately called, has been active in politics, as has his daughter, Ivanka Trump Kushner.

Who comes next

Welker then asked the question that has been pressing on many, saying, “Who do you see as your successor?”

Trump didn't suggest one of his children; rather, he pointed to some of those closest to him in his administration as the likely candidates.

“It’s far too early to say that, but I do have a vice president, and typically, JD is doing a fantastic job," Trump said. "I don’t want to get involved in that; I think he’s a fantastic, brilliant guy. Marco is great. There are a lot of them that are great.”
